In 1776 the United States of America was a new country. Many Europeans wanted to immigrate to America.

The immigrants wanted to move to America for different reasons. The immigrants wanted the American Dream.

Some immigrants moved to America so that they could vote. The United States was a democracy.

Some immigrants moved to America for freedom of religion. They wanted to choose which church to go to.

Some immigrants moved to America to find a job and work. They wanted to make money.

The new immigrants traveled to America by ship. The trip took a month.

Statue of Liberty
When the immigrants entered the New York Harbor, they could see the Statue of Liberty. It was a symbol for freedom.

Liberty Island
The ships had to go to Ellis Island. The immigrants had to go to there for an inspection.

The immigrants got off the ship at Ellis Island.

Inspectors looked at the immigrants’ eyes to see if they had any infections .
The inspectors checked the new immigrants. Immigrants who were sick had to go back to Europe.

Ellis Island is not used for immigrants anymore. It is a museum.
