Thomas Edison was a very famous inventor. He invented more than 1,000 things. He was born in Milan, Ohio on February 11, 1847.

When Edison was a kid, his family moved to Michigan. He sold newspapers on a train. The train went from Port Huron to Detroit.

3 Edison liked to do experiments on the train. One time he accidentally started a fire. Edison got fired.
When Edison was older, he invented the light bulb. There was a problem though. People needed electricity to use it.

Before electricity, People had to use candles or lanterns to see in their houses at night. Edison wanted to change that.

Edison opened power stations. Power stations connected electricity to people’s homes.

People were excited to have electricity in their homes. Now people could use lamps and other things that plug in.

Edison had light bulbs and lamps made in a factory. People could buy them in stores. They used lamps to see at night.

Edison also invented a rechargeable battery. He used it to make a mining helmet with a light on it. Miners wore the helmets. They could see in the dark mines.

Edison also invented movies. Before Edison, there were no movie theaters. People were so excited. They could go to a movie theater and see a movie.

Edison had a great attitude. A famous quote by Edison was, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
