Planting Flowers
I am learning about plants. The study of plants is called Botany.
We went to the nursery at Home Depot. A nursery is a place that grows plants.
We bought lots of different flowers there from the list of our family and friends’ favorite flowers.
My dad taught me how to plant the flowers in bigger pots when we got home.
He showed me the roots on the flowers we bought.
First we had to take the flowers out of these plastic containers.
This is what they looked like after we took them out. They had lots of white roots.
He told me we could not plant the flowers with the roots so tight together.
He showed me how to loosen the roots. This is called “tickling” the roots.
I learned to tickle the roots too.
After we tickled the roots so they had room to grow, we put the flower plants in a pot.
Then we filled the pot with soil.
Soil is another word for dirt.
We bought a lot of pansies to plant.
First, I tickled the roots.
Then, I dug a hole with my fingers.
Next, I put the plant in the hole, and pushed all the soil back around the flower plant. What else does a plant need to grow?
A plant needs water to grow!
It is my job to water all the flower plants.
Planting flowers is a messy job! But it is so much fun!
We planted so many different kinds of flowers. Do you know what kind of flower this is?
We also planted these orange flowers. What is the name of this one?
These are red geraniums.
This flower has so many different colors on its petals. Do you like this one? What is it’s name?
My dad bought this plant for my mom. It is a rose plant. It only has leaves right now. Soon it will have lots of red rose buds that will grow into beautiful red flowers. Do you know what a red rose is a symbol for?
This flower plant has really long stems. Do you know what this flower is called? Who do you know that likes this flower?
Flowers make the world so colorful and beautiful. Learning about BOTANY is fun!
